My Truth About Working in Retail

My Truth Monday is a 12 part series from Denise at Sunny Days in Second GradeI've missed the first two weeks, but have decided to join in late anyway.

This weeks My Truth is Becoming a Teacher (as most of the Sunny Days blogging community are teachers or Homeschoolers).

Since I'm not a teacher, I've done my own version.  My Truth about Working in Retail.

When I was at school, I wanted to be a lawyer. Then I left school early, without my VCE. After being unemployed for a little bit & doing some courses, I was lucky enough to land a job in a supermarket. I started off working in the Meat Dept. It's not as bad as it sounds. From there, I worked in the Deli, back to Meat, then moved into Ticketing. I've been doing that ever since & recently started a day doing payroll. I never thought I would still be working for the same company 16yrs later, but here I am. Sure, there are days when I wish I was doing something else, but even though the is an economic downturn, it's a pretty safe job. I suppose I'm just happy to stay in my comfort zone. As they say, better the devil you know.

Too comfortable. I actually applied for & got another job a few years ago. When push came to shove, I took the easy way out & decided the devil you know, is better than the devil you don't. That's why I'm still with the same company.
Good for you! I worked in retail for a few years before I became a teacher. I often found I had a really sore back and feet from standing up all day... but I loved talking to all of the customers!

It can be very tiring & you do get to see the good & bad in customers.
Safe job alright, people will always have to go to the supermarket. You'd be a valuable employee after 16 years too, you'd know that place inside out :)

You would think so, but these days, it's all about the bottom dollar. Loyalty & years of service, mean nothing, which is very sad.
Yep there is nothing wrong with staying with what is safe when it comes to making sure you can pay the bills! And good on you for being so dedicated I say, An admirable trait we should see more of I say!

Thanks. Those fairy wishes & butterfly kisses will come in handy a the moment.
I could not agree more, a job is a job! Retail is hard yards, I've been there, now I am lucky that I can work from home, well 'lucky' as a mum to 3 kids under 5 can be :) x

I admire those who are WAHMs. Being are to get your home in order, as well as not getting distracted from their work.
I work in retail too, and most days I don't mind it. Don't know that I could do it for 16 years, but definitely a little while I think.
I never thought I could do 16yrs either, but somehow, it just crept up on me.
