We need a solution

I am over the constant coughing, vomiting & runny noses. There has to be a solution.

It's not just the constant cleaning of clothes & bedding after the vomiting, but to here them coughing, sneezing, struggling to breath & not being able to do anything about it.

Here's a post I posted on a forum to ask of anyone had any ideas...

Just wondering if anyone else had an issue with having respiratory issues diagnosed before 2.

Our ex 30 weekers have been having a hard time since last winter, with coughing, running/blocked noses & vomiting. After 5wks of back to back ABs in July, our GP prescribed a nebuliser, which quickly cleared up the problem. Although DS#1 continued to have vomiting issues, that our paed said may just be reflux.

Fast forward to September, where the issue returned. On return to our GP, he again prescribed the nebuliser & suggested Demazin for the sinus/nose with a possibility of hay-fever being the cause. After the Pharmacist informed us that Demazin was now only on prescription & not available for under 2's, she suggest kids Zyrtec, which like the nebuliser, cleared the problem, but still with vomiting issues.

After running out of full cream milk one day, I gave the boys skim milk & what do you know, the vomiting issue disappeared. This I know is a no-no as informed by our MCHN, especially for prems, who told us to change back or at least go 50/50. But the vomiting returned & back to skim we went.

Now again we have the coughing/nose/vomiting back. Our GP said that the issue was obviously caused by a respiratory issue (build up of mucous not being able to be cleared into lungs or similar, backing up the sinuses & causing the coughing/vomiting), but as they are not 2, Asthma (the only thing so far mentioned by both GP & paed, apart from hay-fever) can not be diagnosed & stronger medication can not be prescribed.

Now I am getting so frustrated with the constant changes of clothes/bedding due to the vomiting, not to mention the frustration of seeing the looks on their faces & not being able to help them. The vomiting occurs & then they just go on like nothing has happened, but it must be effecting them, surely. DS#1 (my main vomiter) was always below 10th percentile & I'm sure with him becoming more mobile & the on again off again vomiting & now with his pants falling off more often, that he has either lost or stopped his weight gain. DS#2 is not normally a vomiter, but his sinuses are so blocked (even with the meds lately), that he to in the last week, has vomited just as much.

I saw another GP last Thursday & she has referred us for a chest x-ray, but said not to expect anything. We see the paed again early April, so maybe he can do something with them being almost 2yrs AA. Then again, I may have to wait until they are 2yrs CA.

So I suppose what I am asking, is has anyone else's prem had the issues I've described & what was the outcome, or are these common issues with prems & how can the be rectified. Any advice or knowledge will be appreciated.

There are only 2 replies so far. Not sure if it's because it's a slow moving area of the forum, or if it's me ( I have been know to be a bit of a cow there ).

So if anyone is reading & may be able to suggest something, I would really truly appreciate it.

Outrageous Fortune

I received my belated birthday present in the mail this week from Mighty Ape. Series 5 & 6 of Outrageous Fortune, which means I now have every episode. WooHoo!!!!

Let me tell you a little about OF if you haven't heard of it.

Outrageous Fortune was a New Zealand comedy/drama television series, which was created by James Griffin and Rachel Lang and was produced by South Pacific Pictures. It finished airing its sixth and final season in New Zealand on November 9, 2010, making it the longest-running drama made in New Zealand.

The central plot is that a family of criminals decide to go straight after the patriarch is jailed. Like the show itself, episodes take their names from Shakespeare quotations.

The main characters each walk a fine line between right and wrong according to their respective values - the law, the criminal code of honour, loyalty to family and respectability.

Here's a OF clip.

I seriously recommend OF. It's CHOICE!

I'd also like to send my condolences to the cast & crew, for the sad passing of Ted 'Grandpa' West, AKA Frank Whitten last week. :(

Footy Frenzy Friday #2

After I finished work last Friday night, we had planned to go & see the Brisbane/Essendon/St Kilda Nap Cup game. Before we left, A vomited, which is unusual for him. The weather had been all over the place, so I thought that may have effected him, or maybe he may have caught something from childcare. Anyway, he seemed OK so we got ready & headed off.

Less than 5 mins down the road, he brought up a little phlegm. I debated on whether to go home at that stage (in hind sight I should have), but he again seemed OK. Then another 20mins later he had a larger phlegm vomit. Hmmm. All seemed OK & we arrived at Ethidad a little late, but all OK.

We were expecting between 25-50ml of rain, but as the temp was 27 degrees, I took off the boys long sleeve guernseys & out on their footy singlets. We gave them a drink of water, that they skulled & then DH offered them a sandwich. R nibbled away on his, but A wanted nothing to do with it. He just cuddled up to me, like he was tired.

We sat through a disgraceful first half between Brisbane & Essendon, then another embarrassing 2nd half, where in the end Essendon triumphed over Brisbane 1-1-11-(76) to 0-2-2-(14).

During the break, the had a Legends game, which was good, but that was when things went from bad to worse with A. He had another few mouthfuls of his drink & a rice rusk that DH gave them. He had moved from the cuddled up position where he had been, to bouncing on the seat (so I figured he was better). But as he pointed out onto the field, Mt Pinatubo erupted. I copped it. All of it.

After taking him to the change room, then going back to actually get the nappy bag & changing him, I tried to fix myself up. Unlike the boys, I didn't have a change of clothes, so I had to stay in my damp, vomit smelling jeans until I got home.

We left as soon as A was changed, which was about 5 or 10 mins into the first half & were home not long as the 3rd game started.

Brisbane's Vic Family Day was on the next day, but after an eventful night, I decided not to go.

A is better now, but has vomited a few times since. R who is our normal regurgitator, has almost returned to his daily occurrence of vomiting. Apparently as they are not yet 2, diagnosis of asthma or other digestive/respiratory condition can not be made. Even the paed said that it is not worth doing tests to see what is causing the vomiting, until after they turn 2. I did take them to see a GP (not our normal one, but one at the same clinic) yesterday, who has given us a referral for a chest x-ray for each of the boys, just to have a look to see if anything is causing an obstruction, but she to said not to expect to find anything.

In the mean time, we just have to put up with the vomiting & countdown the 50 days (OMG!!! I better get that birthday party organised), until something may be able to be done.

Work & Childcare

Well I've gone back to work after 2yrs maternity leave, which means the boys now have to go into Childcare. Ok, they don't really have to, but I think it's time for them to start socialising with other kids. Just to see the looks on their faces when we go out to a playcentre or equivalent. It's like there is so much more for them to explore.

I'm only working 2 days per week, 5hrs per days, but after this week, it's definitely enough. Financially we are worse off, but I need time out. Time away from the boys (don't get me wrong. I loved them to death & would never give them back after going through so much to get them, but I need some space), time away from the house & time away from DH.

After my first day back, I crashed at 8:30pm & didn't wake up until the boys stirred at 6:30am.

After the boys first 2 days at CC, I think A has caught something. He threw up before we went to the footy last night, then again on the way there, then finally topped it off, by vomiting all over me (*Reminded, take a change of clothes for myself to keep in the car, just in case). As R is the one who normally vomits, it's very out of character for A. A even fell asleep in the car on the way home & was drifting in & out as I changed his nappy & put his PJs on when we got home. If his still is not himself by Monday, I'll take him to the GP.

Family Day

Today was the Richmond Tigers Family Day. Fans gather to meet players, while the players are officially presented their jumpers, for the 2011 AFL season.

While last year was very hot, today was cold. But still lots of people turned out for the fun & entertainment.

Although we had a good day, someone put a spanner in the works when the nappy bag (with napppies, wipes, spare clothes, etc), was left at home.

Footy's Back for 2011

With the NAB Cup starting this week, it's the beginning of the 2011 AFL season.

The NAB Cup has a new format this year, with 6 pools of 3 teams, playing 3 games of 2 x 20 mins halves. Confused? Take a look here.

Tonight Carlton, Richmond & Collingwood play. It's good for us, because the Tigers play in the 1st & 2nd games, so we can leave, before the Carlton V Collingwood game is over & avoid the crowd.

Hopefully it's a good night, although it is looking cold outside & with R & A not 100% ATM, it looks like a real winter footy night, even thought we are in the middle of summer.

Happy Birthday to Me

Today I turn 33 & what have I accomplished in the last 33yrs...?

TBH, apart from my beautiful boys, not a lot.

So from today, I plan to make the rest of my Dash more worth while. Enjoy the best, more important things in life & not stress about the unimportant things. Leave behind the past & what cannot be undone, but change the future & make it more memorable. Discard those toxic people & things, & surround myself with only those who mean something.

Today is the first day of the rest of my life.

Back to work

I have a meeting with my store manager tomorrow. Apparently I was supposed to be back at work on Monday, but since no one contacted me, I didn't worry about it. He rang me around 2pm on Friday to discuss things. The day before I'm supposed to return. How bad is that.

I can't see myself retuning FT. If I did, the boys would need to be in FT CC & that just isn't affordable. They do need CC for their social development though. I figure if they go into CC for 2dpw & I work 2, maybe 3 days for 5 or 6hrs, then that gets me out of the house, I keep my job & the boys get their social interaction. DH will still dialysis in centre 3dpw & we'll have 4dpw for outings & appointments. Well, that's the idea... ATM.

We'll see what tomorrow brings.
